Want to Slow Down Aging? Think Positive!

Do you believe that forgetfulness and mental decline are simply part of aging? As it turns out, just believing this can be enough to lead to memory issues as well as physical and psychological health decline.

The more positive you are, the healthier you are

A new study from the University of Pennsylvania has found that negative thoughts can accelerate aging. Researchers found that seniors with a more positive attitude toward aging tend to have better cognitive function and physical and psychological health than those who expect adversity and illness from old age.

The researchers conducted an online survey of participants aged 65-90 across the United States. To measure their expectations of old age, they used a 12-item questionnaire that assessed respondents' views on physical health, mental health, and cognitive function in old age.

  • Physical health — the expectation of becoming less active
  • Mental health — the expectation of feeling more anxious or depressed
  • Cognitive function — the expectation of becoming more forgetful

The scientists also assessed the participants' cognitive abilities using a special questionnaire and compared it to data from 10 years ago. Interestingly, all three types of expectations about aging showed a similar relationship. Those who did not fear deterioration felt better and had better memory.

Older adults with diagnosed cognitive impairment were excluded from the study.
